Kansas women 5th, men 6th in Big 12 track

? Ashley Brown and Crystal Manning claimed individual titles in the 100 hurdles and triple jump in pacing Kansas University’s women’s track team to a fifth-place finish Sunday at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

The fifth-place mark tied for the best ever by KU’s women in league championship history.

Jordan Scott won the pole vault Sunday for the KU men, who placed sixth.

Brown, a junior from Overton, Neb., broke her own school record in the 100 hurdles, crossing in 13.27 seconds. She is the first KU woman to win the event since Gwen Poss in 1981.

Brown placed second in the 400 hurdles in 57.56, a day after setting the KU event record in the prelims (57.54). Brown also was a member of the 400-relay team which placed fifth and the 1,600 relay team, which placed seventh. She helped KU to 24 points.

“To come back after missing last year and claim a conference title is something I have worked especially hard to do. To also break two school records is equally as thrilling. Now I just look forward to keep improving as I head to the Midwest Regionals,” Brown said.

Manning, a junior from Terrell, Texas, shattered her school record in the triple jump with a Div. I-leading 44-113â4. She also was a member of the 400 and 1,600 relay teams.

“Heading into the weekend, I wanted to consistently jump around 44 feet, and I did that all day,” Manning said. “This mark represents a lot of hard work and training, and I put all my trust in God because without him, nothing like this would be possible.”

Scott, a freshman from Watkinsville, Ga., cleared a Big 12 meet-record-tying 18-21â2. His leap qualified him for the Olympic Trials and upcoming U.S. championships. His leap is best in the country this year.

“This has been quite a great freshman year,” said Scott, who also won the league indoor title. “The conditions were great today and once I cleared 5.25 meters, I just got into a groove and took care of business. I want to thank my family, teammates and coach Tom Hays for their support. I couldn’t think of a more perfect Mother’s Day gift.”

Junior Hugh Murphy of Baldwin placed second in the javelin in a season-best 219-5. The mark represents the fifth-best javelin mark in KU history.

“Even though the conditions were less than perfect, to set a new season best at my first Big 12 Conference championships and score the team eight points was great,” Murphy said.

Senior Janiece Gatson placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in 59.28 seconds, while sophomore and sophomore Sha’Ray Butler placed in 1:03.41.

Junior Julius Jiles overcame an early slip to finish sixth in the 110 hurdles. Jiles placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in 51.37.

Junior Matt Baysinger placed seventh in the 800 in 1:53.25.

Freshman Lauren Bonds placed sixth in the 3000 steeplechase in 10:41.82. Senior Melissa O’Rourke was sixth in the 1500 in 4:37.25. Victoria Howard earned eighth in the 100 in 11.78.

Sophomore Stephanie Horton placed fifth in the shot in a career-best 50-81â4, third best mark in KU history.

Juniors Colby Wissel (14:37.26) and Paul Hefferon (14:39.61) finished fourth and seventh in the 5,000 run.
