Bike races

To the editor:

Wow, the great bicycle time trials. I find the whole thing quite inconvenient with all the road closings.

The city and county has spent hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to build bicycle paths that the bikers will not use.

To start with, I do not like the “I own the road and I have a right” attitude displayed by the majority of the bikers I have encountered. I hate it when the weather clears and they all come out to block traffic while they “get their ride.” Hello! It’s your spandex vs. 2,000 pounds of steel. Be sure to yield and don’t run that stop sign!

Take the whole mess some place else and very few will miss it. Why not do this sort of thing out at Heartland Park or some other track that is not in use during the business day. There is lots of seating for the throng of fans that follow bicycles. Besides all of that, I have not seen one story or mention of who is paying for all the police officers and county equipment being used to stop the normal flow of commerce.

I know there will be a flurry of letters now about how much money is coming into the area because of the thousands of bike race fans who are spending tons of cash at all the local and national chain shops, restaurants and bars, we have in Lawrence.

Why not close off K-10 for a few days each year for some auto drag racing? That should pack em in!
