KU sweeps twinbill

Jayhawks overpower CSU, 10-0, 8-2

Kansas University’s baseball team did little more than what was expected.

Playing host to Chicago State, the team with the second-worst record in Div. I baseball, the Jayhawks came away with 10-0 and 8-2 victories Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.

“I thought we did what we should have done,” KU coach Rich Price said.

Kansas hasn’t exactly taken care of business against smaller conference schools this season, with losses to Oral Roberts, Northern Colorado and Missouri State, all losing teams with a combined record of 57-87.

Price gave unorthodox instructions to his team entering the weekend, telling his team to play against the baseball instead of the team in the other dugout or the scoreboard.

So far, so good. The Jayhawks have outscored the Cougars 30-3 in three games.

“For us, we’re trying to play at the same level that we play at in the Big 12, and you’ve got to play defense every day you walk on the field,” Price said. “We’ve played three straight games not having made an error, and I’ve been really pleased with that.”

Price also had to be pleased with his team’s pitching and run support. Kansas pitchers allowed only seven hits and two runs Saturday – both in the fourth inning of Game Two.

KU pitcher Nick Czyz started Game One and pitched a one-hitter through five innings with only one walk. Ryotaro Hayakawa relieved and pitched two scoreless innings before the game ended after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

Zach Ashwood also went five innings in the nightcap and allowed two runs on three hits. Hiarali Garcia pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

The game ended after the top of the seventh inning because the Cougars have only played seven innings in the second game of doubleheaders all season because of the lack of depth in their pitching rotation.

Kansas hitters were efficient in their 12 innings of at-bats, scoring 18 runs on 14 hits.

In the opener, nine Jayhawks had RBIs, and seven came away with hits. First baseman John Allman had the best performance, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs off a double in the first inning.

Buck Afenir (30) gets high-fives from his teammates after hitting a grand slam in the third inning of the second game of a doubleheader with Chicago State. KU won both games Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Only four Jayhawks drove in runs in Game Two, with catcher Buck Afenir hitting his second grand slam of the season in the third inning. Afenir is the only KU player with a grand slam this season.

The KU hitters also drew 12 walks against the CSU pitchers, who struggled with their control at times, walking in two KU runs on the day.

“It’s tough to sit back on these guys,” center fielder Kyle Murphy said. “Obviously you’ve got to take it like a guy that’s throwing a lot of off-speed, take that approach.

“Because you’re going to face guys in our conference that are going to have 60, 70 mph curveballs. Although those might be the fastballs these guys are throwing, you’ve just got to keep that same approach and look to go the other way with them.”

Kansas and Chicago State play the final game of the four-game series at 11 a.m. today. The Jayhawks have yet to sweep a series of three or more games this season, but that’s their goal this weekend.

“Not very many times you walk out and that’s your intention,” Price said. “But the reality of the fact is, when you’re a Big 12 Conference school, you should take care of an independent opponent, and we need to finish the deal tomorrow.”
