De Soto in trophy chase

? De Soto High’s doubles team of Andy Edwards and Daniel Hoschouer won twice Friday at the Class 4A boys state tennis tournament to advance to today’s semifinals at Topeka Hayden.

The duo won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, in their opening match against a Buhler duo, and followed up with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in the quarterfinals against a team from Andover. They will face the top seed from Independence in the semifinals.

The Wildcats also saw both their singles players remain alive in consolation play. Matt Edwards beat Goodland’s Josh Cech, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4; lost to Iola’s Eric Sparks, 6-2, 6-1; and beat Buhler’s Aaron Peak, 9-3, to reach the consolation semis and guarantee himself at least an eighth-place finish.

Andrew Konetzni took the same path, beating Peak, 6-4, 6-3; falling to Independence’s Zach Willis, 6-3, 6-2; and beating Andover’s Richard Lee, 9-2. Should he and Edwards both win their first matches today, they would face each other in the fifth-place match.

Today’s matches begin at 9 a.m.
