Club news

The Betty Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met April 21 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. Members attended a white glove tour at the Dole Institute of Politics.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. May 19 at Alvamar Golf and Country Club, 1809 Crossgate Drive. The cost for lunch will be $15, and reservations are required by Sunday. Please send reservations to Gerry Livers, 841-8349, or Shari Johnson, 843-6199. The meeting will feature a presentation by Gail Beale, of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The fifth-grade winner of the American History Essay Contest, and an ROTC member are scheduled to attend, and a memorial ceremony will be conducted for members who have died recently.

¢The Kaw Valley Bridge Club will offer a Mentor Game at 9 a.m. Thursdays beginning May 24 at the Kaw Valley Bridge Center in the I-70 Business Center, 1025 N. Third St. The game will give nonlife masters a chance to play with life masters, or each other, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Partners are guaranteed, and participants will be able to learn more about bridge in a casual atmosphere. For more information, call Chris Lane at 842-2655.

On May 5, the club conducted its Annual Meeting and Election Game, a two-session pairs game directed by Virginia Seaver. Ten and a half tables played in the morning session, and 10 played in the afternoon session. Overall winners were Shari Krentzel and Katie Loeseke, who won first in A and B; Ed Howard and Vince Nordberg won second in A, and Jeff Nash and Rosemary Searcy won third. Harry Shaffer and Grant Sutton placed second overall in B, followed by Judy Hildreth and Chris Lane who won third in B. Ginny Johnston and Bobbie McCorkle won first in C, and Clarice Broz and Marilyn Martin won second.

¢The University Bridge Club announces winners of its May 5 meeting. Hosts were Tom and Cathy Waller. Blue winners were Lois Liebert, first; Jean Khatib, second; Alice Akin, third; George Bocquin, fourth; and John Golden, fifth. Pink winners were Ruth Harwood, first; Carolyn Jordan, second; Myrna Ikenberry, third; Donna Riehm, fourth; and Jane Golden, fifth.

¢The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at eight tables directed by Chris Lane on May 2. Phyllis Brownlee and Virginia Eddy won first overall, winning in A, B and C and playing North-South. Suzanne Wassmer and Eldon Herd won second in A and B, followed by Klee Zaricky and Betty Collier, who won third in A and B. Judy Bevan and Bobbie McCorkle won second in C.

At East-West, Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro won first in A, and Cathy Blumenfeld and Shirley Reese won first in B and second in A. Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges won second in B and third in A. Ellie and Bobby Patton won first in C, and Madelyn Jenks and Jo Andersen won second.
