Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 10, 1907: “Even though there has been some warming, the recent bitter cold seems to have wiped out most of the local fruit crops. One man who normally has huge crops says he will have no peaches or pears whatever this year and apples also have been hit hard. Many say this is the worst onslaught ever suffered this late in the spring. : The fair committee met yesterday and set Sept. 17-21 as the dates and established an admission fee of 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for children, with a weeklong pass selling for $1. Superintendents for the departments also are being named. : The ongoing crusade of Kansas against the deadly green bugs in the wheat crops seems to be failing despite all the efforts of the university people and other experts. More funds are needed to find answers and so far there are none of any size being offered. Kansas millers have not been notable for their contributions, and one might think they should be. : Taft and Hughes seem to be the likely presidential ticket in 1908 and there is every evidence President Roosevelt will fully back them.”
