Wal-Mart developers considering next move

The waiting will continue a bit longer to find out what’s next for a controversial proposal to build a Wal-Mart store at Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive.

Bill Newsome, a co-owner of the proposed site at the northwest corner of the intersection, said Tuesday that Wal-Mart and the developers were still considering whether to submit a new plan for city commissioners to consider. The group is weighing that option against the prospect of proceeding with a lawsuit it has filed alleging that city leaders illegally denied Wal-Mart a building permit.

At the City Commission’s May 1 meeting, Mayor Sue Hack invited the developers to submit new plans for consideration. The City Commission previously voted 3-2 against the Wal-Mart proposal. But the April election saw two of the three commissioners opposed to the project leave the commission.

Newsome declined to offer a timeline for when Wal-Mart and the developers would make a decision.
