From the Lawrence Daily World for May 8, 1907: “The state board of health reported 76 cases of tuberculosis in March resulting in 52 deaths. There were also 28 cases of typhoid fever causing nine deaths. Scarlet fever had a lower than normal rate. : Former sheriff E.E. Myers has been named the local marshal under the administration of Mayor George Barker. : Under contracts signed recently, Ottawa will get a new windmill factory, backed by more than $50,000 in locally raised capital. : The state textbook commission has issued a list of preferred books and few are by Kansans. Most of the books come from big firms in the East. : The junior class at the university is in mourning because of postponement of its prom. The floor of the new gymnasium building where the party was to be held (Robinson) could not be finished in time. A postponement was necessary. : The board of education held its monthly meeting and George Innes was re-elected president. Wilder Metcalf is vice president and F.P. Smith the clerk.”
