Public trust

To the editor:

The Lawrence city commissioners do not appear to be listening. The citizens of Lawrence have made their opposition to a Wal-Mart at Sixth and Wakarusa clear for years, through letters, petitions and speaking at commission meetings. As elected officials, isn’t the commissioners’ first duty to serve the electorate? They have an obligation to listen and consider what is in the best interests of the people of this community, not what is in the best interest of individual land owners, developers or huge, multinational corporations.

To not do this is to betray the public trust that was placed in them the day they were elected to office.
