Wang nearly perfect for N.Y.

? Chien-Ming Wang carried his bid for a perfect game into the eighth inning before Ben Broussard homered with one out, leading the New York Yankees over the Seattle Mariners 8-1 on Saturday.

Facing a Mariners team that got season highs of 15 runs and 20 hits the previous night, Wang (1-2) was in control the whole way. He was trying for the 16th perfect game since 1900, including Don Larsen’s gem for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series.

Randy Johnson has the last perfect game in the majors, for Arizona at Atlanta on May 18, 2004.

Arlington, Texas – Michael Young homered and had five RBIs, including a two-run double that keyed a six-run third inning off Toronto ace Roy Halladay.

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Brendan Harris hit a game-winning RBI single in the 12th inning and Ty Wigginton hit two solo homers to lead Tampa Bay.

Chicago – Aramis Ramirez homered and Chicago benefited from three bases-loaded walks by an emergency reliever to won for the seventh time in eight games.

Atlanta – Derek Lowe outpitched Tim Hudson, giving up an unearned run in seven innings for Los Angeles in a battle of first-place teams.

Milwaukee – Jeff Suppan won his fifth straight start, J.J. Hardy hit a three-run homer and Milwaukee improved to 10 games over .500 for the first time since 1998.

Miami- Josh Bard’s single in the 12th inning brought Brian Giles home with the eventual winning run, as San Diego rallied late and went on to beat Florida.

Cincinnati – Chris Iannetta and Matt Holliday hit two-run homers off Cincinnati’s battered bullpen, powering Colorado.

San Francisco – Barry Bonds hit his 744th career home run for San Francisco, moving him within 11 of Hank Aaron’s record of 755.

Phoenix – Jorge Sosa outpitched reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb, and Shawn Green homered and drove in three runs for New York.
