Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for May 5, 1907: “A Lawrence man is running advertisements calling himself a ‘ghost baiter’ who can rid haunted houses of troublesome spirits. There is no evidence anyone so far has hired him though his promotion is strong. : Lawrence and KU people continue to give generously to help Baker University replace its burned-out gymnasium. The $15,000 amount from insurance will not begin to cover the serious loss. : Many of the state’s top high school athletes are due here tomorrow for a major track meet. The cold weather, however, is discouraging and many said the turnout will be cut by the cold and recent snow, the latest snow ever recorded in this region. : No more parasite bees to fight wheat field green bugs will be shipped out until the weather is warmer. The cold kills the bees that are supposed to kill the green bugs. The state’s millers and the Kansas Grange are combining to help all they can and KU is in the forefront of the effort.”
