Radio-controlled planes are expected to take to the skies this weekend east of Clinton Lake. The second annual Jayhawk Open, a free airshow offered by the Jayhawk Model Masters R/C Club, runs from about 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday. The show is south of Lawrence along Douglas County Road 458, about 3 miles west of U.S. Highway 59. For more information, call Jerry Foree at 749-0594.
¢The Lawrence Music Club will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive. The club will hear a program by the Junior Music Club Festival superior winners, recognize 50-year members and install officers. The club will celebrate National Music Week on May 6-13.
¢The Lawrence African Violet Club will conduct its annual Spring Violet Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12 at the Malls Shopping Center, 23rd and Louisiana streets. Come early for the best selection. Club members are asked to arrive at 8 a.m. to help set up.
¢The University Bridge Club announces results of its April 28 meeting. Hosts were Robert and Jean Etherton with Al and Carol Smith. Blue winners were Paul Jordan, first; Dale Kring, second; Gini Wigington, third; Bebe Huxtable, fourth; and Tom Waller, fifth. Pink winners were Carol Smith, first; Cathy Waller, second; Lois Liebert, third; Carolyn Jordan, fourth; and Jane Golden, fifth.
¢Debbie Ellebracht, Law-rence, and Sue Schmidt, Baldwin City, attended the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International’s annual Phi State Convention on April 20-22 in Wichita. Ellebracht and Schmidt are members of the Omicron Chapter in the organization, an honor society for women educators.
Maria Elena de Alcala, the society’s representative from Latin America, gave the keynote address at the Presidents’ and Founder’s Banquet on Saturday. The convention also featured workshops, award presentations and a Friendship Breakfast on Sunday. Ellebracht, Omicron Chapter president, was appointed to the planning committee for the 75th anniversary celebration of Phi State (Kansas), which will be conducted in 2011.
The Omicron Chapter plans to meet at 9:30 a.m. today in the library at the Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.
¢The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library conducted its annual meeting April 26. Janet Mody was honored as a recipient of the Mary Dalton Murphy Volunteer Award. Mody began volunteering with the group about 10 years ago, after she retired as an English teacher at Lawrence High School. She has served on the Friends board and as secretary, vice president and president of the group. Murphy is a former head of reference at the library.
The group recognized the work and dedication of Jean Hetherington, a longtime volunteer who died in February.
Diane Low, Thelma Helyar and Janice Friedman were elected to the board. Mary Burchill, a founding member, gave a talk about the group’s beginnings. Fred McElhenie, another founding member, also attended.
¢The Friday Afternoon Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at 10 and a half tables directed by Virginia Seaver on April 20. Playing North-South, Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro won first in A. Jean Otney and Janice Hollowell won second in A and first in B and C, and Judy Hildreth and Dianne Childs of Wamego won third in A. Lois Clark and Betty Collier won second in B and C. Third in B and C went to Linda Randall and Linda Swain.
At East-West, Vince Russo and Ed Howard won first in A. Madelyn Jenks and Mona Bell won second in A and first in B and C. Eldon Herd and Bob Dailey won third in A and second in B, and Bebe Huxtable and Wanna Roszel won third in B and second in C.
¢The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at eight and a half tables directed by Chris Lane on April 18. Mary Joyce and Jane Holliman won overall at North-South placing first in A, B and C. Mona Bell and Chris Lane won second in A and B, followed by Betty Collier and Shirley Reese. Ann Thompson and Pat Musick won second in C.
Lois Clark and Mark Osborn won first in A and B playing East-West. Wanna Roszel and Bebe Huxtable were second in A and B and first in C. Elle and Bobby Patton won second in C and third in A and B.
On April 25, the club played a stratified Mitchell movement at eight and a half tables directed by Chris Lane. Sally Taylor and Mona Bell won at North-South, taking first in both A and B. Carol Ball and Chris Lane won second in A and B, and Bobby Patton and Mark Osborn won third. Phyllis Brownlee and Virginia Eddy won first in C. Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro won first in A at East-West. Lois Clark and Cathy Blumenfeld won second in A and first in B and C, followed by Nita Scales and Shari Krentzel who won third in A and second in B and C.
¢ The Monday Evening Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at 10 tables directed by Virginia Seaver on April 23. Jambo Zhang and Harry Shaffer won first in A playing North-South, followed by Clyde Romer and Jeff Nash who won second in A and first in B. Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle won third in A. Earle Cord and Ajit Sampat won second in B and first in C, and Madelyn Jenks and Phyllis Brownlee won third in B and second in C.
Donna Johnson and Paul Heitzman led the East-West teams winning first in A, followed by Elle Patton and Ed Howard who won second. Don Bush and Vince Nordberg won third in A and first in B and C. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley won second in B and C and Bobby Patton and Shari Krentzel won third.
On April 30, the club played a stratified Mitchell movement at 11 tables directed by Virginia Seaver. Ed Howard and Harry Shaffer won first in A at North-South, followed by Julia Brooks and Lester Dalton in second place. Phyllis Brownlee and Madelyn Jenks won third in A and first in B and C. Clyde Romer and Vernon Gregg won second in B, and Martie Hartman and Patricia Burgstahler won second in C.
Donna Johnson and Pete Petillo led the East-West teams winning first in A, followed by Jeane Landry and Lynn Hui. Lois Jones and Jeff Nash won third in A. Jane Holliman and Ann Thompson won first in B and C. Emily Foster and Judy Bevan won second in B and C. Sally Taylor and Klee Zaricky won third in B.
