Construction projects valued at more than $20 million were under way or in the planning stage at Kansas University, including a $5.8 million humanities building. Not included was the private $4 million Jayhawker Towers apartment complex.

Kenneth Thompson, assistant city manager for Lawrence, was leaving for the post of city manager of Prescott, Ariz. He was 35 and had served as city planner under manager Harold Horn before becoming Ray Wells’ top assistant 14 months previously.

The split about U.S. military involvement in Vietnam continued to widen from Washington on down to local levels, such as the Kansas University campus. And “hawks” and “doves” continued to draw battle lines and debate the issues hotly here and across the nation. Some feared violent confrontations, particularly on college campuses.
