From the Lawrence Daily World for May 4, 1907: “Held back at one time by a fog, a large fleet of liners arrived all the same time in New York today, bringing into port the largest number of aliens ever recorded in one day, nearly 18,000 in all. More than 30 liners brought the newcomers and taking care of them was a major problem. : The next state convention of the Kansas Degree of Honor Grand Lodge will be here next year, a major acquisition for the city. : The green bug that is devastating Kansas wheat fields seems to be of Italian origin and appears to have been in our country now for some 10 years. There are serious problems in Kansas this year trying to combat the bug. : The Wichita Eagle opines that when KU graduates 250 students this year it will add 250 ‘energy units’ to the industry of the state. : The snow which fell in some parts of this area today is the latest ever recorded. Topeka had more than two inches and word is that vegetation has suffered terrible. Icicles as long as six inches were hanging from some Topeka buildings. More harmful freezing is projected for tonight in the region.”
