How many of Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino’s recruited players have been drafted by NFL teams?

None so far. The last KU player drafted, David McMillan in 2005, played his last two seasons under Mangino, but was recruited by predecessor Terry Allen. Mangino’s drought could end next year if defensive back Aqib Talib, who’ll be a fourth-year junior this fall, opts to turn pro. Talib is a cinch.

How are former Free State High standouts Robby Price and Ryne Price doing with KU’s baseball team this spring?

Robby stepped right into the third-base job as a freshman and is hitting .281, the fourth highest batting average on the team. Ryne, a junior, leads the Jayhawks in home runs with eight and is second in on-base percentage, but is struggling mightily at second base, where he has made a team-high 19 errors.

Why does KU’s baseball team have the only overall losing record in the Big 12 Conference?

It’s not just one thing, that’s for sure. In this week’s league statistics, the Jayhawks are next-to-last in earned-run average and in fielding and last in batting average. KU is also last in stolen bases. One bright spot: KU’s pitchers lead the league in strikeouts.

Does Kirk Hinrich have some kind of a hex on Dwyane Wade?

He might. It seems like every time Hinrich is on the other bench in a meaningful game, Wade winds up being embarrassed. First it was in the 2003 NCAA Final Four when Hinrich’s KU team buried Marquette, 94-61, in the semifinals. Then Hinrich and the Chicago Bulls shocked Wade and the defending champion Miami Heat with a four-game sweep in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

How come we never hear anything about the NBA Developmental League?

What??? You didn’t hear about the Dakota Wizards edging the Colorado 14ers in overtime in the NBADL championship game Sunday night in Bismarck, N.D.?

Will Brandon Rush make it into the first round of the NBA Draft and earn a guaranteed three-year contract, or will he fall into the never-neverland of the second round?

Right now, they’re saying Rush is a second-rounder, but perhaps if he spends some time around Wayne Simien he’ll get lucky. Like Rush, Simien wasn’t assured he would go in the first round of the 2005 draft, but Big Dub slipped in as the next-to-last player chosen.

Is Amanda Costner, the KU golfer who was medalist at the Big 12 women’s championship, related to actor Kevin Costner?

No and, in case you’re wondering, “Tin Cup” isn’t the favorite movie of the senior from Claremore, Okla. According to the KU golf media guide, Costner’s favorite flick is “Dumb and Dumber.”

Didn’t Lawrence play host to a Futures Golf Tour event a couple of years ago?

In fact, the grooming ground for the LPGA Tour made a stop at Eagle Bend Golf Course almost exactly two years ago. Lori Atsedes won the event. Now 43, Atsedes is still on the Futures Tour.
