A Topeka man was sentenced Monday to nearly 10 years in a federal prison for injuring 11 people in 2003 when he sprayed gunshots into the ground outside a downtown Lawrence bar.

Jason A. Tremble, 25, was sentenced to 115 months in federal prison for the Oct. 5, 2003, shooting spree outside the It’s Brother’s Bar & Grill, 1105 Mass.

“Eleven people were struck and injured by flying debris and bullet fragments when Mr. Tremble began randomly discharging a weapon into a sidewalk at a popular college hangout,” U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren said in a prepared statement.

“The federal sentence will ensure that he spends an appropriate amount of time in jail for his offense,” Melgren said.

Tremble was on probation in Shawnee County for other offenses when he was arrested for the shootings. At that time, he pleaded guilty in Douglas County District Court to 11 counts of aggravated battery and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Federal charges of illegally possessing a firearm were then filed against Tremble.

The new federal sentence will run concurrently with the shorter, 40-month state prison sentence Tremble received from a Douglas County district judge.

“What once was a 40-month sentence becomes 115 months,” said Jim Cross, public information officer for Melgren.

Tremble also must serve a 34-month sentence in the two Shawnee County convictions, for a total of 149 months, or more than 12 years, Cross said.
