Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for March 30, 1907: “The other night when our curfew whistle blew, one man was heard to say, ‘That whistle isn’t good for a thing. No one pays any attention and all it is good for is to set our watches.’ However, many say that when the whistle blows, children can be seen running for home. : Zona Heckert of DeSoto and George Doel are married. Doel is a Union Pacific operator and is one of several persons suspected of assaulting Miss Heckert when she was nearly killed by a beating at the rail station some months ago when she was working as a night operator. Miss Heckert has said Doel was not the guilty party and has defended him.”
