Old Home Town – 25 years ago

As cleanup operations began, the manager at the FMC Corp. plant in North Lawrence estimated the damage from a fire at about $100,000. Joel Jacobs, the manager, said the estimate included the loss of chemicals, minor equipment damage and the estimated cost of chemical disposal. He said the building had sustained surprisingly little damage. No injuries were reported.

With a flurry of balloons, speeches, tours and handshakes, Lawrence’s new Holidome was officially opened with huge numbers of the public in attendance. The sprawling 155,000-square-foot complex was the newest motel here and the first able to accommodate large conventions.
