Duo guide armchair travelers
Alban and Melanie Ulle host “1,000 Places to See Before You Die” (8 p.m., Travel).
Who on earth are the Ulles? Newlyweds from Colorado, they were selected from more than 900 couples vying for the chance to plan their own 14-week world tour, visiting 13 countries and dozens of destinations, from Alaska to Cambodia.
Shot entirely in high definition, “Die” makes a nice addition to “Planet Earth,” and “Amazing Race,” shows for the armchair traveler.
A fresh-faced couple seems an odd fit for the “before you die” theme. Perhaps the show should be called “Things to Do Before You Settle Down With a Mortgage and Kids.”
¢ Actress Annabelle Gurwitch and dozens of her famous friends appear in the documentary “Fired!” (7:30 p.m., Showtime), a whimsical meditation on getting canned.
Gurwitch became obsessed with the subject only after being fired from a play by Woody Allen in a rather brutal fashion. A dramatic re-creation of the scene is presented here, “starring” Gurwitch and a pretty good Allen impersonator.
Gurwitch then decided to talk to friends and colleagues about their experiences on the short end of the pink slip. The results are funny and revealing. She eventually turned the whole process into an ongoing stage show.
Actress Illeana Douglas lost her job as a coat-check girl inside of four hours. Tim Allen got fired from a tool-and-die plant because he worked too quickly. Richard Kind didn’t look “Chicago” enough for a series pilot. Sarah Silverman’s termination from “SNL” arrived in the form of a fax to her agent. Actor and economist Ben Stein explains what it’s like to get fired from the (Ford) White House, by Donald Rumsfeld, of all people.
“Fired!” remains amusing when it sticks to Gurwitch’s show-business associates, but when she compares the problems of actors between gigs to ordinary people without jobs, “Fired!” becomes rather glib and smugly self-obsessed.
¢ Speaking of job disasters, Toby (Paul Lieberstein), the human-resources director, hosts a five-episode marathon of “The Office” (NBC) that unfold as follows: Michael ruins diversity day (7 p.m.), Dwight manhandles health care (7:30 p.m.), a visit from Todd (8 p.m.), Michael seeks sympathy (9 p.m.), Michael “outs” a colleague (9:30 p.m.).
