Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 28, 1907: “Everyone is urged to vote in favor of the $40,000 in bonds to provide a manual training school and expand parts of the high school. At present combined tax assessment for state, county, city, school library and interest in sinking funds amounts to a little over 7 percent of assessed valuation of property in the city limits. The bond issue would increase the tax bills only about one-seventh and it is something badly needed and well worth the cost. It is important Lawrence schools be made the best in Kansas. : There are filthy conditions in some of our alleys, particularly in the 800 block between Kentucky and Vermont, and people say a dead cat has been left there for two months. : The first of the pictures for the heralded university art exhibition arrived this morning from Kansas City and great care is being taken to provide one of the finest shows ever seen here. : Much discussion could be heard this morning about the comet that was supposed to hit earth and end the world as we know it. By now, it seems rather obvious that will not happen.”
