Lawrence man has surgery after shooting

A Lawrence resident had surgery Tuesday afternoon after being shot in the face during an armed robbery in Denver.

Ian Dumpert and two others were injured Sunday morning at a Denver light-rail station. Dumpert needed surgery to remove a throat tube and to wire his jaw shut, said Trenton Foster, a Kansas University senior and Dumpert’s roommate. Dumpert’s jaw will be wired shut for three to four weeks.

Foster and Dumpert were among a group of seven people who were robbed. Denver police say the incident was the latest in what they think is a string of four violent robberies since Friday. The suspects were described as two black males in dark blue clothing and face masks.

The other two shooting victims are recovering.

Joseph Kuebel, a KU student, likely will leave the hospital today or Thursday after getting shot in the back and leg, Foster said. John Watt, a Kansas State University student who was hit with two bullets to the neck area, has been released from the hospital.
