Wake me when ‘Dream Vote’ is over

How much cheese can America stand? I’ve admitted that I enjoy those awful “Idol” moments when the kids do a “Brady Bunch”-like musical number disguised as a Ford commercial. I even sat through Peter Noone singing “There’s a Kind of Hush” on last week’s “Idol.” But I just may have to draw a line in the cheese when it comes to watching Donny Osmond.

Osmond and his amazing teeth have been in the business of show for 43 years. And his sparkling, spunky routine has been giving me the creeps for almost as long. My personal feelings aside, Osmond is perfectly cast to host “The Great American Dream Vote” (9 p.m., ABC), the umpteenth variation on “Queen for a Day” to come down the video pike.

Contestants present their dreams to a studio audience and are then eliminated until just two worthies battle it out to have his or her dream realized.

These aren’t exactly impossible dreams out of “The Man of La Mancha.” A fireman wants to open a florist shop; an animal lover dreams of a home for elderly basset hounds; a prematurely bald student has visions of a fuller head of hair; a computer whiz wants an opera singer to serenade his girlfriend. A teacher has a vision of one day opening a theme park filled with chickens.

Maybe America needs better dreams.

¢ The reality series “Work Out” (9 p.m., Bravo) returns for a second season. The show features Jackie Warner, the trainer and entrepreneur/owner of a place that’s repeatedly described as “L.A.’s hottest gym.” If the place is so hot, then why is her biggest client Kathy Griffin, who describes herself as the queen of the “D-list”?

At least Griffin provides comic relief from the show’s central themes of self-improvement and self-absorption. In addition to talking about working out all the time, Warner is breaking up with her lover of long standing. This drags us to hopeless therapy sessions with Warner’s girlfriend, who does seem monstrously noncommunicative.

Warner also launches a venture called “Skylab,” dedicated to helping plus-sized clients get in shape. Warner reveals empathy and understanding with these less-than-fabulous folks, but one can’t help thinking that an episode of “The Biggest Loser” is about to break out at any moment.
