Two mineral severance tax measures were lined up before a Kansas Senate committee firing squad and squarely met their deaths. But one of the bills – which had the backing of 70 supporters in the Kansas House – was still on a life support system because of a parliamentary tactic by Senate minority leader Jack Steineger, a Democrat and a close associate of Gov. John Carlin. Carlin strongly favored a sound severance tax package.

For the first time in the memory of Douglas County officials, the county temporarily suspended the license of a local tavern to sell 3.2 percent beer. The establishment was Babes in the Woods, located at the junction of highways 224-40 and 32. Reasons for the unusual action were not elaborated.
