Roadway consultant on commission agenda

March 21, 2007

The Douglas County Commission tonight will discuss hiring a consultant to study future roadway corridors between U.S. Highway 59 and Kansas Highway 10 east of Lawrence.

A few months ago commissioners directed Keith Browning, county engineer, to prepare a request for proposals for a consultant study of the corridors.

The cost could be substantial, Browning said in a memo to commissioners. He noted that a study of 31st Street a few years ago by the city cost $100,000. This study could cost twice as much.

Commissioners also will consider approving an agreement for engineering services for benefit district improvements to North 600 Road between Douglas County Road 1055 and East 1750 Road.

The meeting starts at 6:35 p.m. in the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.

Yet another Consultant which will cost twice as much as the last one which was $100,000.00?

I am still waiting for an answer to my last post on this subject. (How much has the City of Lawrence spent on consultants in the last two years?

Does anyone have an answer?

We need consultants to pick our consultants to insure their predetermined conclusions match what the consultants want.

"Consultants" have become the new "roundabout." Doesn't really matter if they are effective or the best solution for anything, mere mention will bring a plethora of knee-jerk negative responses.

Agreed, they have a pretty bad reputation as a waste of money adding no real value. Kind of like roundabouts except roundabouts don't go home and cash our checks.

What consultants do is too often just a waste, but like them or not, they aren't going to go away, regardless of who we elect in the next few election cycles.

But the fact is, they also quite often provide useful information and analysis exactly as they are supposed to.

Unfortunately, just like roundabouts, the criticism tends to be reflexive, unfocused and uninformed and therefore unlikely to be helpful.

Can you name me a consultant or a roundabout that cost $80 million?

Where do you suppose that number came from?

I love you, bozo. You are anti-growth but pro-consultant.
