Fire destroys home in Leavenworth County

A fire destroyed a house in Reno Township, which is located between Lawrence and Tonganoxie on U.S. Highway 24-40.

The blaze started around dusk Monday in the 11500 block of 238th Street and was extinguished between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Lawrence Torneden, fire chief for Reno Township, said that State Fire Marshal investigators hadn’t determined the cause. But according to Leavenworth County sheriff’s reports, the fire was not classified as suspicious.

Torneden said the house was a “total loss.” According to the Leavenworth County appraiser’s office, the house had an appraised value of $127,830.

Leavenworth County Undersheriff Ron Cranor said the home was owned by Alvin W. Reetz, but that 59-year-old Gene Hadal and 52-year-old Thelma Y. Yeapau were renting the house. Hadal, Yeapau, three children and a guest were at the house when the fire started, but none of them was injured.
