Hamas gunmen break cease-fire

? Hamas gunmen shot and wounded an Israeli electrical worker Monday just outside the Gaza Strip in the first such attack by the Islamic movement since it agreed four months ago to stop rocket fire and other military strikes from the strip.

Hamas fighters later fired two mortar rounds at Israeli soldiers near Gaza’s main cargo crossing with Israel.

Israel condemned the attacks, which came as international donors are deciding whether to recognize the Hamas-led Palestinian unity government sworn in over the weekend.

The prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, told Palestinian lawmakers Saturday that the new government endorsed “resistance in all its forms” to end Israel’s occupation of territory captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

“He called for resistance until the end of the occupation and his Hamas followers understood very well what he meant,” said Miri Eisin, spokeswoman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. “We hope the international community will note both his words and their actions.”

The Israeli government has decided to boycott the new Palestinian government, whose platform pledges to respect previous agreements with Israel but does not explicitly recognize the Jewish state or renounce violence. The Bush administration said it will not meet with Hamas officials, but might work with ministers from the rival Fatah party or those from outside the two main movements.
