The University Women’s Club announces its scholarship winners for the 2007-08 academic year: Bridget Livers, Overland Park; Kayla Buehler, Lansing; Erika Meza-Zerlin and Kasey Bowden, both of Topeka; Hilary Hungerford, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and Erin Questad, Newton Center, Mass. Each will receive $1,500 for the 2007-08 year.

The winners, who were chosen based on need, academic achievement and community service, will be honored at a luncheon April 5 in the Malott Room at the Kansas Union. Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education, will speak at the event.

Founded in 1900, the University Women’s Club has given more than $80,000 in scholarships to women attending KU since 1915, making it the longest continuous scholarship-awarding unit at KU. For more information about the club, go to groups.ku.edu/~univwm.

¢The National Federation of Music Clubs conducted a Junior Festival on March 10 at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive. The event featured 155 entries from seven Junior Music Clubs. The festival included piano solos, duets, duos, hymn playing, violin solos, concertos, fiddling and musicianship theory. Each student was given a rating and a critique sheet.

The clubs participating were Falen’s Fanfare Piano Club, Lawrence Suzuki Strings, Musicale de San Miguel and Loy Piano Studio, all of Lawrence, and Malotte’s Music Club, Marysville Mozart Music Club and Fincham Strings Studio, all of Marysville. Evelyn Falen is chairwoman of the Junior Festival, and members of the Lawrence Music Club assisted at the festival.

University Bridge Club announces results of its March 10 meeting. Hosts were Dale and Wanda Kring. Blue winners were Dave Gaumer, first; Walter Hicks, second; Janet Dunn, third; Dale Kring, fourth; and Lois Leibert, fifth. Pink winners were Carol Smith, first; Florence McNicoll, second; Jane Golden, third; Edna Galle, fourth; and Donna Gatts, fifth.

The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at eight and a half tables directed by Chris Lane on March 7. Playing North-South, Ed Howard and Harry Shaffer won first in A. Elle and Bobby Patton won first in B and C and second in A, while Chris Lane and Chuck Hedges won third in A and second in B. Clarice Broz and Marilyn Martin won second in C.

At East-West, Mark Osborn and Grant Sutton won first in both A and B, followed by Shirley Reese and Mona Bell who won second in both strata, and Shari Krentzel and Judy Bevan who won third. Marge Hitchcock and Ginny Johnston won first in C.

The Friday Afternoon Bridge Club played a stratified Howell movement at five and a half tables directed by Virginia Seaver on March 9. Linda Swain and Linda Randall won first overall, placing first in A, B and C. Virginia Seaver and Chuck Hedges won second in A, and Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro won third.

Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges won second in B, and Shari Krentzel and Debbi Bettinger won third in B and second in C.

The Monday Evening Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at nine and a half tables directed by Virginia Seaver on March 12. Playing North-South, Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle won first in A, while Clyde Romer and Dave Piro won second. Larry Brock and Jeff Nash of Topeka won third in A and first in B. Phyllis Brownlee and Mary Joyce won second in B and first in C, followed by Elle and Bobby Patton who won third in B and second in C.

Dorothy Netson and Barbara Merriam, both of Topeka, led the East-West pairs winning first in A, B and C. Bob Hemenway and Jambo Zhang won second in all three strata. Jean Otney and Eldon Herd won third in A and B, and Linda Randall and Linda Swain won third in C.
