Old Home Town – 40 years ago

The squabble over whether the local school board could build an elementary and junior high school on the Broken Arrow site gave rise to calls for better city-school communications. Many thought the issue could be resolved with reasonable give and take.

Carol Ridenour Abernathy became the 12th candidate for the March 21 city commission primary election, which was due to narrow the field to six for the April general election.

Wyandotte and McPherson collided in the Class AA high school basketball title game at Allen Fieldhouse and Wyandotte won. The victorious Bulldogs were led by Pierre Russell, John Poindexter and Alonzo Thomas. All later had athletic careers at Kansas University, with Russell’s basketball activities being the best known.
