Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for March 143, 1907: “The Santa Fe’s new park at Baldwin is to be in the shape of a heart. The Santa Fe certainly has a proper sense of the fitness of things for a Methodist college town. : The anti-fraternity movement for high schools continues but it appears some youngsters are still secretly meeting under Greek aegises. : Several local fruit dealers are worried that their trees are budding too early and might get walloped by late frosts. Peach trees seem to be most strongly threatened. : St. Patrick’s Day is Sunday, March 17, and local stores reflect the holiday with their fetching green displays. : Lawrence people do not seem to know that much of the fish they eat is shipped here from great distances, such as from Seattle. It is very hard to get truly fresh fish here because of transportation and preservation. : The mayor election is upon us and everyone should vote, Republican or Democrat. Law enforcement seems to be a hot topic with the goal of closing all the joints here. George Barker has promised a good, clean town, well run.”
