Angels fly over K.C.

L.A. gets 18 hits on Royals

Los Angeles Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick flies over the Royals' Alex Gordon after Jason LaRue hit into a double play during the second inning of a spring training game Tuesday in Tempe, Ariz.

? Garret Anderson and Brandon Wood hit their first homers of spring training, and the Los Angeles Angels got 18 hits Tuesday in a 13-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Angels right-hander John Lackey, in line to start on opening day, pitched 31â3 innings. He allowed one run and six hits with five strikeouts in his second outing of the spring.

“It was OK,” Lackey said. “It wasn’t great.”

Angels manager Mike Scioscia pulled Lackey with runners on second and third because his pitch count had reached his limit of 60.

“My arm feels really good,” Lackey said. “I wasn’t tired when I came out. I threw some off-speed stuff when I got behind and got that done.”

Lackey, 13-11 with a 3.56 ERA in 2006, would start for the Angels on opening day April 2 against Texas should Scioscia’s rotation remain the same throughout the spring.

Anderson went 3-for-3 to lift his average to .500. He hit his homer off left-hander Neal Musser.

“Garret’s seeing the ball really well right now,” Scioscia said. “He’s laying off some pitches. It’s good to see him hit one off a lefty.”

Ryan Shealy went 3-for-3 for the Royals.

Royals right-hander Todd Wellemeyer, hoping to win a spot in the rotation, was roughed up for five runs and six hits in 22â3 innings in his first Cactus League start and third appearance overall.
