If you’re not from around here, don’t freak out at 1:30 p.m. today – those sirens are only a test.

The National Weather Service will conduct a statewide tornado drill for both Kansas and Missouri at that time.

The weather service is working with emergency management agencies this week in both states at the local and state levels.

As part of the drill, the National Weather Service office in Pleasant Hill, Mo., will issue a test tornado warning.

Local warning sirens, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration All-Hazards Weather Radios and the Emergency Alert System will be activated when they get the warning to signal the start of the drill.

According to Teri Smith, acting director of Douglas County Emergency Management, there are 33 outdoor sirens in Douglas County.

They sound for only 60 seconds on test day.

During an emergency, they will blare for three minutes and may be sounded several times.

Local officials can opt to sound them all, individually or regionally.

From March through July, the outdoor sirens are tested on the first and third Mondays of the month. From August through February, they are tested on the first Monday of the month.
