Landowner applications available on Thursday
Wildlife and Parks will accept applications for participation in the Landowner Incentive Program from Thursday until Sept. 1.
This voluntary program will enable private landowners to receive technical guidance and financial incentives to benefit at-risk species identified in the Kansas Wildlife Action Plan.
Some examples of potential projects to enhance habitat include restoring native vegetation, brush and invasive weed management, and restoring playa hydrology.
Interested landowners can call project coordinator Chris Berens at (785) 462-3367 or the nearest Wildlife and Parks district biologist.
Inlet at Lovewell closed to fishing
In order to prevent illegal snagging during walleye spawning seasons, the inlet at Lovewell Reservoir will be closed to all fishing through April 8.
Since 1988, Wildlife and Parks has managed Lovewell to produce large mature walleye for broodstock and a high-quality fishery by enforcing an 18-inch minimum length limit.
Although Lovewell will not be used as a walleye egg collection site this year, it is still necessary to protect these fish from legal as well as illegal harvest during the spawning season, when they are most vulnerable.
Hunter ed academy lures more than 180
More than 180 certified Kansas hunter education instructors attended the Wildlife and Parks’ annual Hunter Education Instructor Academy earlier this month at Rock Springs 4-H Camp, south of Junction City.
The academy is required every three years for certified hunter education instructors.
