Arkansas’ Schmidt silences Jayhawks

? Kansas University sophomore lefty Nick Czyz threw seven innings and allowed just three runs on three hits, but it wasn’t enough as No. 10 Arkansas secured a 4-0 baseball victory Saturday at Baum Stadium.

Czyz had his longest outing of the season, striking out seven. He trailed just 1-0 entering the eighth inning, when he allowed his first two hitters to reach and was replaced by reliever Paul Smyth. The two inherited runners scored, while Smyth allowed a run of his own.

Meanwhile, Arkansas starter Nick Schmidt was also turning in a strong mound performance, tossing eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight.

Robby Price, John Allman, Erik Morrison and Buck Afenir each collected one hit for the Jayhawks. Allman had the only extra-base hit by either team, doubling into the right-field corner in the ninth off relief pitcher Travis Hill.

Price extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in his second at-bat. It matches the longest hitting streak by a KU player this season.

The Jayhawks will look to avoid the sweep today when the teams meet for the series finale at 1:05 p.m.
