Plea agreement made on molestation charges

Days before a scheduled trial, a Parkville, Mo., man reached a plea agreement Friday and was convicted on two charges that he molested a young female family member years ago when he lived in Lawrence.

Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone convicted Joseph Schwartz, 35, of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child after Schwartz pleaded no contest.

According to the plea agreement, both sides will ask Malone to sentence Schwartz to serve 12 years and nine months in prison.

Schwartz was facing charges of aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties with a child in relation to an allegation that he inappropriately touched the girl in 2000.

The girl, who is now a teenager and has cerebral palsy, testified during an October hearing that at the time of the incident she was unaware the act was wrong until she learned about it six years later in a health class at school.

Schwartz already is listed on the Illinois Sex Offender Registry because of a 2000 conviction in Schaumburg, Ill., for abducting a 14-year-old girl, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s office. Malone will sentence Schwartz on April 5.
