Ex-Haskell coach Dietz among Hall nominees

? Former Haskell Institute coach William “Lone Star” Dietz, the namesake of the NFL’s Washington Redskins, was among 83 candidates on the 2007 football bowl subdivision ballot for induction to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Dietz guided Washington State to a 17-2-1 record over three years, including an upset of Brown in what is considered the first modern Rose Bowl. He coached Haskell from 1929 to 1932 and died in Reading, Pa., in 1964.

The Hall of Fame Class will be announced May 9.
