Contreras struggles; Royals win

? Jose Contreras felt great, even if he didn’t entirely show it.

Scheduled to be the regular-season opening-day starter for the Chicago White Sox, Contreras allowed two runs over four innings Wednesday in a 10-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

“I was throwing everything right in the zone, and I was feeling good,” Contreras said through an interpreter. “I even scared myself the way I was throwing those pitches.”

Contreras gave up five hits, struck out six and walked one, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first. In his previous outing, he gave up two runs in two inning against Arizona.

“Last year I had a pulled leg, in order to compensate for that I was doing other things I just couldn’t do,” Contreras said. “This year I am feeling 100 percent and back to normal and in the zone.”

Kansas City’s Dewon Brazelton allowed one run and four hits in three innings against the White Sox, who have lost seven of nine. Brazelton, a non-roster invitee with an 8-25 career major-league record, gave up Josh Fields’ solo homer in the second.

The Royals’ David DeJesus hit an RBI double in the second following an 0-for-13 start.

Kansas City scored five runs in the ninth inning off loser Oneli Perez.

Notes: Chicago closer Bobby Jenks is expected to pitch in a spring-training game today for the first time since feeling tightness in his right shoulder in his spring-training debut. … Chicago has hit into a major-league-high 13 double plays this spring training, including two Wednesday.
