The nation's jobless rate for the past month was listed as a discouraging 8.8 percent, with more than 5.6 million Americans reportedly out of work. In Douglas County, the rate was half that, 4.4 percent, and in the state of Kansas, the jobless rate was 4.8 percent - all quite encouraging considering the national situation.
