Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 3, 1907: “The Kansas House today passed the University of Kansas appropriation bill. The Senate already has approved it and Gov. Hoch is due to sign it soon. The bill carries appropriations for the 1908-09 biennium amounting to $779,834, by far the largest appropriation ever made by a state legislature for any education institution. The bill provides money to build a new engineering building at a cost of $100,000; to build an annex for mining engineering, $50,000; additions to the power plant, $50,000; and for a number other needed improvements. There will be more money than ever before for administration and maintenance of the local school. The only opposition came from Balie Waggener, Democrat from Atchison. He proposed to “cut the tar” out of the appropriation but was quickly overruled. : George J. Barker has decided to run for mayor of Lawrence. Mr. Barker is one of the best citizens in the city and his pronouncement makes him an excellent candidate with high promise.”
