Plummer’s status uncertain

Denver – Jake Plummer’s status with the Denver Broncos was in limbo Friday. The quarterback, who lost his starting job during the 2006 season, reportedly rather would retire than accept a trade to Denver, the NFL Network and other media sources reported Friday.

The Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers reportedly had worked out an agreement that would send Plummer to the Buccaneers in exchange for a middle-round draft pick.

But Plummer, who has three years left on his contract and is due $5.3 million in 2007, reportedly is balking at the possible trade.

Patriots release Dillon

Foxborough, Mass. – The New England Patriots released running back Corey Dillon on Friday, cutting ties with the top active runner in the NFL on the first day of free agency. Dillon, 32, split duties with rookie Laurence Maroney last season and has said he was considering retirement.

Fletcher, Redskins agree

Ashburn, Va. – Linebacker London Fletcher agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract with the Washington Redskins on Friday. The agreement includes a $10.5 million signing bonus.

Falcons sign fullback

Atlanta – The Atlanta Falcons opened free agency Friday by signing fullback Ovie Mughelli and releasing injury-plagued linebacker Ed Hartwell. The Falcons also released veteran linebacker Ike Reese, who was used primarily on special teams.

Browns to add Steinbach

Cleveland – The Cleveland Browns have agreed to contract terms with free-agent offensive lineman Eric Steinbach on a seven-year deal, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told the Associated Press on Friday.

Garcia meets with Raiders

Alameda, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders opened the free-agency season by meeting with Jeff Garcia on Friday, but the highly sought-after quarterback plans to talk to other teams before deciding where to sign for next year.
