Kansas softball wins 2 at Tulsa

? Kansas University’s softball team collected 22 hits and two victories on the opening day of the Great Western Downtown Plaza Classic on Friday.

The Jayhawks beat Iowa State, 7-4, and Tulsa, 9-0 in six innings.

Against ISU, KU’s Elle Pottorf and Stevie Crisosto each went 3-for-4. Pottorf had two RBIs, and Amanda Jobe had three RBIs. Pottorf’s two RBIs came on a two-run homer in the top of the sixth that gave KU a 7-2 lead.

Val George (1-2) earned her first win of the season, allowing nine hits, striking out four and walking none in six innings. Freshman Sarah Vertelka picked up her first career save after giving up a hit and fanning one batter in the seventh inning.

ISU used three different pitchers with starter Katie Reichling (0-3) getting the loss after the first one and two-thirds innings.

In the rout of Tulsa, three Jayhawks homered.

Nine Jayhawks notched hits in the victory. Betsy Wilson led paced the offense with two hits, while Pottorf, Nicole Washburn and Tiffany Craner each notched a home run.

Senior ace Kassie Humphreys (7-1) struck out seven and allowed just three hits in five innings to take the win. Freshman reliever Sarah Vertelka fanned one batter and kept the Golden Hurricane scoreless in the final inning to seal the outcome.

Tulsa’s Julie Fennell (3-4) gave up 10 hits, struck out six and walked four in the complete-game effort.

KU (9-5-1) will face North Texas at 1:30 p.m. today.
