Injury accident clogs K-10 traffic

One person taken by helicopter to Kansas City hospital

A one-vehicle injury accident on westbound Kansas Highway 10 reduced traffic to one lane shortly before 4 p.m. today.

A car carrying two females drove off the north side of westbound Kansas Highway 10 near O’Connell Road, striking a utility pole and causing a live wire to fall nearby.

A LifeStar helicopter took the driver of the vehicle to Kansas University Medical Center while an ambulance transported the passenger to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

One witness said the car passed him on the highway and then lost control, spinning off the road before hitting the utility pole.

“It snapped that telephone pole like a twig,” said Howard Johnson, a Lawrence resident who placed a call to 911 shortly after the accident.

Rob Kort, battallion chief with Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical, said authorities were still investigating the cause of the accident.

The identities and conditions of the victims was not immediately available Thursday afternoon.
