Boy Scout Troop 65 in Baldwin City hosted the Pelathe District’s annual Webelos Graduation Weekend, May 11-13 at Spring Creek Park at Old City Lake.

The event, organized by adult leader Mark Shuck, drew 95 Cub and Webelos Scouts from throughout the Pelathe District, which is Douglas County. Participating Cub Scout packs were 3013, 3052, 3055, 3057, 3064, 3065 and 3072. Troop 65 was assisted by Troop 64, of Eudora, and Venture Crew 2652, of Lawrence.

The Cubs and Webelos participated in activities including wood tools, nature, engineering, plants, cooking, fire building, first aid, storytelling, knots, branding, Target First Class, and Tenderfoot 101.

Ian Kirk, Nathan Clem, Jacob Brungardt and Dylan Slavin, all second-year Webelos with Pack 3065, crossed over into Troop 65 at the campout. The campout also featured an Arrow of Light bridging ceremony, potluck dinner, cooking contest, evening campout, trading post and a Sunday camp chapel led by the Rev. Kirby Hays, of Baldwin City.

Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to First Presbyterian Church, participated in a high-adventure trip in the Comanche Peaks Wilderness area in northern Colorado.

Twenty-eight Scouts and leaders departed from Lawrence on June 15 and spent two days acclimating to the altitude in Colorado. On one day, Scouts participated in rock climbing, fly fishing, mountain biking and other activities at Rocky Mountain National Park. On the second morning, the group tackled a team-building Challenge Course in Colorado State University in Fort Collins. The afternoon was spent white-water rafting on the Poudre River where the water was cold enough that all the rafters wore wetsuits.

The backpackers then were divided into three crews. The first group was composed of younger Scouts and leaders, and they had a day hike on the Mount McConnell Trail near the Poudre River. Scouts in this group included Matthew Day, crew chief Josh Seybert, Kane Eggers, Luke Peirce and Phillip Gabler. They were accompanied by adult advisers Ed Day, Jackie Counts, Bruce Eggers and Kirk Low.

The older Scouts backpacked for five days and four nights. The second group trekked into the Timberline Lake area and set up base camp from which they took day hikes to nearby peaks and trails. The Scouts included crew chief Kevin Workman, John Corkins, Bryce Best, Joe Stogsdill, Brock Norwood, Nathan Wycoff, Keagan Taylor and Nolan Kappelman. They were accompanied by adult leaders Jordan Wright, Weston Norwood and Scoutmaster Mark Stogsdill.

The third crew went on a loop hike on Hourglass Trail, climbing above 12,000 feet on the north shoulder of Comanche Peak. This group had to travel off the trail to avoid large snowfields at higher elevations. They also built a snowman and went sledding on the first day of summer. Scott Ragan was crew chief, and he was accompanied by Ben Seybert, Keenan Wycoff and Chase Low. Adult leaders for this group were Chris Armstrong, Russ Seybert, Keith Wood and Karen Wycoff.
