Old Home Town – 100 Years Ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 30, 1907: “After a number of complaints, the U.S. postmaster general has sent out a notice that all rural mail carriers have the right-of-way on country roads and that all carriages or conveyances must surrender to the carrier routes. It is a serious matter to disrupt delivery of the mail. : Attendance was heavy at the meeting about planning for the rock road between here and Kansas City and enthusiasm seems high about work beginning soon. : The home of A.W. Lamb at 1740 Mass. was destroyed by fire this morning. Insurance coverage is considered good but there is discussion about possible incendiarism. : Joseph Moore, an employee at the local canning factory, caught his thumb in a machine used in canning pears and the thumb was so smashed it had to be amputated. This is the second recent accident at the factory. Several days ago, a woman caught her hair in a piece of machinery, however, she escaped without serious injury.”
