4-H and FCE news

¢ Several area students were honored at the Douglas County 4-H/FFA Spring Sheep Show on June 17 in Lawrence. Simon Fangman, Lawrence, had his Weather Dam ewe selected as reserve grand champion ewe.

The other ewe breed champion was a Champion Hampshire shown by Holly Swearingen, Lawrence, who also had her 90-pound Suffolk lamb chosen as reserve champion prospect market lamb. Swearingen also had the top Dorset entry, and Taylor Stanley, Baldwin City, had the top Hampshire entry.

Hillary Saathoff, Tonganoxie, was selected champion of the senior showmanship class, and Conner Nottingham, Lawrence, was reserve champion. The intermediate showmanship class was won by Jessica Gulley, De Soto. Taylor Stanley, Baldwin City, was chosen as reserve champion. Brandon Stahel, Overbrook, earned the champion junior showmanship award.

Rocky Swearingen is the Douglas County sheep leader.

¢ The Family and Community Education Council met June 5. Margaret Fuston, president, reported on the May 10 District Day program.

Susan Krumm, family and consumer science agent, reported that few teenagers are participating in the free lunch program, which is available for youth ages 1-18. For more information about the program, call 843-7058.

Krumm also reported that the Douglas County Fair book is available at www.dgcountyfair.com, or a copy can be viewed at the extension office. She handed out building supervision schedules for the fair to FCE members.

Rachel Purvis reported on the out-of-county tour to Hutchinson, set for Oct. 24. The cost is $76 a person, and the registration deadline is Oct. 2. For more information, contact Alice Eisele at 843-7515.

The next Red Cross blood drive is set for Aug. 20 at First Christian Church. Kanwaka and Vinland FCE units will furnish cookies.

The next FCE Council meeting is set for Sept. 4 in the Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

¢ The Kanwaka 4-H Club met June 11 at the Kanwaka Hall. To start the meeting, members joined in the flag salute and recited the club pledge. Song leaders Martha and Maggie Kesler led the club in a song.

Members answered roll call by telling their father’s middle name. Minutes from the March meeting were read and approved. The Banner Committee reported it would meet from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays in June at the Dicksons’ home. The photography leader announced he would have a short gathering after the meeting.

Carey Rainey has sign-up sheets for the fair concession stand and building watch groups, and gave a review of the beef show concession stand fundraiser. It was reported that five club members and one leader attended the Bromelsick Memorial. The group was reminded that fair books are available from a leader and that fair entries are due July 2. Last-minute entries are discouraged.

The club agreed to conduct the August meeting with the Kanwaka Mini Fair at 4 p.m. July 22. Members agreed to wait for more information about how the club could contribute to the Greensburg 4-H relief. The club agreed to sign up and bring donations for chemotherapy support kits at the July meeting.

Members enjoyed a game of freeze tag, and the meeting was adjourned by saying the club motto: “To make the best better.”
