Report: Predators pursuing K.C. bid

NHL squad could play in Sprint Center, Canadian paper says

? A $220 million deal to buy the Nashville Predators could be in jeopardy as the team’s current owner looks at a second bidder, which could still mean the relocation of the franchise, according to a news report.

Citing anonymous sources familiar with the events, the National Post in Canada reported Thursday that billionaire Jim Balsillie’s offer was turned down this week by current owner Craig Leipold.

Instead, Leipold is pursuing a less-lucrative bid from San Jose, Calif.-based venture capitalist William “Boots” Del Biaggio III – originally estimated at $190 million – the paper reported.

But Del Biaggio, who owns a minority stake in the NHL’s San Jose Sharks, has an ownership agreement with Kansas City’s Sprint Center to bring a team there.

Del Biaggio did not immediately return messages from the Associated Press, and Predators spokesman Gerry Helper declined to comment on the report.

“We are currently free to explore any and all options regarding the sale of the Nashville Predators,” he said in a statement. “However, until and unless there is a binding agreement in place, we do not plan to comment on the status of Predators ownership.”
