Mariners slip past Red Sox
Mariners 2, Red Sox 1, 11 inn.
Seattle – Jose Lopez was watching unpredictable Manny Ramirez – just like many curious people do at Red Sox games.
Lopez noticed that Ramirez was positioned close to the left-field line in the bottom of the 11th, creating a large gap in left-center.
Lopez pulled Joel Pineiro’s pitch into the gap for a double, scoring Ichiro Suzuki and helping the surging Mariners beat Boston.
Suzuki drew a one-out walk off Pineiro (1-1), the former Mariners starter. Lopez then hit a 1-0 pitch that eluded a leaping, twisting Ramirez, the ball caroming past center fielder Coco Crisp and allowing Suzuki to score easily.
“I’m not going to make excuses. I hung a pitch,” Pineiro said, before adding the ankle he twisted stepping on teammate Eric Hinske’s heel during pregame stretching Monday still hurts.
Orioles 4, Yankees 0
Baltimore – Roger Clemens was denied his 350th victory by the Baltimore Orioles, who used a four-run sixth inning and an overpowering pitching performance by Erik Bedard to beat the Yankees.
White Sox 5, Devil Rays 3
St. Petersburg, Fla. – Mark Buehrle pitched seven strong innings as the White Sox came from behind to beat the Rays.
Athletics 13, Indians 7
Cleveland – Jack Cust had a career-high five RBIs, Shannon Stewart finished with four hits and the Oakland Athletics snapped a five-game losing streak.
Blue Jays 5, Twins 4
Minneapolis – Gregg Zaun hit a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays overcame four errors to win for the fifth time in six games.
