The Kansas River bridge over the Kansas Turnpike at Lawrence was being repaired to take care of the damage that had been caused by vibrations of traffic over the years. The move was being made not because of any dangers but as a routine maintenance and upgrading operation, officials said.

A 17-year-old grandniece of murder victim Donald L. Hatchell was one of two juveniles suspected in Hatchell’s slaying earlier in the month, according to juvenile records released here. The girl, Lisa Dawn Bigenwalt, was named with William J. McTaggart III, 15, in the case.

The Kansas Corporation Commission had approved a new rate system to encourage citizens to use less energy for air-conditioning during the hot spells.
