Trust officer attends seminar on fraud

Barbara J. Braa, a trust officer with CornerBank, Lawrence, attended “Rethinking Aging: An Educational Program for Bankers on Preventing Fraud of the Elderly,” June 13 in Wichita.

The seminar explored the complex nature of financial and investment fraud of elders – a problem estimated to strike 12 percent of the elderly population, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse.

Seminar attendees learned how to recognize early warning signs of investment fraud; how and to whom to report investment fraud suspicions; how banking records can be an essential component in investigating securities fraud; and how elders’ vulnerabilities increase their risk of being victims.
