Raiders advance to semis

Lawrence's Matthew Abel fouls off a pitch in the Raiders' 8-3 victory over the Arkansas City Black Diamonds. The win Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark gave the Raiders a berth into today's semifinals of the Al Ice Memorial Woodbat Classic.
For the second time in three days, the Lawrence Raiders had to sit through a 20-minute delay mid-game at Hoglund Ballpark because of the lights going off.
But the stoppage – which came after all the games Saturday in the Al Ice Memorial Woodbat Classic started two hours late because of a wet field – seemed to have a positive effect on Raiders starting pitcher Drew Hulse in a 8-3 victory over the Arkansas City Black Diamonds.
After the fourth-inning darkness delay, Hulse gave up no hits and allowed just one base-runner, whom he hit with a pitch.
“I had good command of my pitches and was able to keep the ball low, locate them all and got good movement,” said Hulse, who gave up just one earned run in seven innings. “I felt real comfortable out on the mound.”
A day after being no-hit, Lawrence collected nine hits and had seven other batters reach via walk or hit by a pitch.
The offense was led by Tyler Sanders, who replaced Hunter Scheib in the early innings because of an injury. Sanders went 3-for-4 and collected three RBIs.
The Raiders return to Hoglund Ballpark today for a semifinal matchup with the Blue Valley Jaguars at 10 a.m.
