Cubs put squeeze on Sox
Theriot's ninth-inning bunt decisive in 2-1 victory

Ryan Theriot of the Chicago Cubs puts down the winning squeeze bunt against the White Sox. The Cubs won, 2-1, on Saturday at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

Chicago – Ryan Theriot’s suicide squeeze against Bobby Jenks in the ninth inning drove in the go-ahead run and lifted the Chicago Cubs over the struggling White Sox.
Theriot laid down a bunt between the mound and the plate as pinch-runner Angel Pagan broke toward home. Jenks (2-3) fielded the ball but had no play at the plate.

Miami – With slugger Justin Morneau sidelined for the first time in 192 games, the rest of Minnesota’s lineup picked up the slack.

Washington – Victor Martinez hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth.

San Diego – Chris Young pitched one-hit ball for seven innings, and Khalil Greene homered twice.
Blue Jays 11, Rockies 6
Toronto – Frank Thomas hit his 498th career home run, and Matt Stairs matched a career high with four hits. Stairs went 4-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs and scored twice. It was the third four-hit game of his career and first since June 14, 2000, at Minnesota. Thomas finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

Arlington, Texas – Jamey Wright overcame shaky control to win for the first time in almost a year, and Michael Young had four RBIs to lead Texas over Houston. Gerald Laird hit his fifth homer of the season in the eighth for Texas.

New York – David Wright dropped an RBI double in front of diving right fielder Travis Buck in the ninth inning. Orlando Hernandez and Oakland starter Joe Blanton matched zeros most of the way in a tight game that included an equipment-throwing tirade by New York catcher Paul Lo Duca.
Tigers 2, Braves 1
Atlanta – Justin Verlander pitched seven innings to win his fourth straight start, and Detroit beat Atlanta, leading Braves manager Bobby Cox to pick up a record-tying ejection. Cox was thrown out of the game in the ninth inning by plate umpire Chad Fairchild. Cox’s ejection gave him 131 for his career, tying the record set by John McGraw.

San Francisco – Rookie Nate Schierholtz ended San Francisco’s season-long eight-game losing streak with a two-out RBI single in the 13th inning.

Seattle – Raul Ibanez hit his fourth career grand slam in the first inning.
Devil Rays 4, Dodgers 3
St. Petersburg, Fla. – Dioner Navarro hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning as Tampa Bay beat Los Angeles.
Angels 10, Pirates 1
Anaheim, Calif. – Kelvim Escobar breezed to his ninth victory, Vladimir Guerrero homered, and Los Angeles routed Pittsburgh. The Angels, vying for their third AL West title in four years, are off to the best start in franchise history at 48-27 and are 21 games over .500 for the first time since finishing 95-67 in 2005.

Phoenix – Eric Byrnes homered, and Arizona rallied from four runs down.
Cardinals 8, Phillies 3
St. Louis – Juan Encarnacion and Chris Duncan homered, Adam Wainwright pitched six sharp innings, and the Cardinals beat Philadelphia to stop the Phillies’ six-game winning streak in St. Louis.
